Teen arrested in shooting death of father
PICKENS — An Easley teen was charged with manslaughter in the late-night shooting death of his father in Pickens last week.
Joshua William Wright, 17, whose address on an incident report was listed as 301 Katie Lane, was also charged with discharge of a firearm inside city limits, according to Pickens Police assistant chief Travis Riggs.
Wright’s father, 46-year-old Joseph Wright, was pronounced dead at Greenville Memorial Hospital after the shooting, Riggs said in a statement.
According to the incident report, officers were dispatched to 210 Bivens St. in Pickens
Man charged with sex assaults on young girl
PICKENS — Pickens County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested an Easley man last week, alleging he forced a young girl to have sex with him multiple times over a period of a year.
Jeremy Keith Kitchens, 41, of 101 Greenpine Way, is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor under 11 years of age.

Doodle Trail grand opening

PICKENS — The long-awaited grand opening ceremony for the Doodle Trail will be held this weekend.
The celebration, set for 10 a.m. Saturday at 514 Fleetwood Drive in Easley, will include words from both Pickens mayor David Owens and Easley mayor Larry Bagwell, as well as the unveiling of the logo for the trail, a ribbon cutting and giveaways.
The 7.5-mile trail runs from Easley to Pickens along the path of the former Pickens

EASLEY — The Big League Baseball World Series, a week-long baseball tournament featuring some of the most talented 16-18-year-old players in the world, recently announced the dates for this year’s event, as well as a new format.
Celebrating its 15th year in Easley, the Big League Baseball World Series will take place July 28-Aug. 4.
New this year, the tournament will begin and end on a Tuesday instead of Wednesday
Ceremony held to honor Revolutionary War soldier
DAR members, local residents and descendants of Benjamin Barton were present for a ceremony dedicating new tombstones for the Revolutionary War soldier and his wife, Dorcas, at Mountain Grove Baptist Church in Pickens recently.

Pickens plans spring game, youth events
PICKENS — Pickens football players of all ages are gearing up for a busy few weeks.
Friday night, Pickens High School will wrap up spring practice with its annual Blue/White Football Game, which will kick off at 6 p.m. at Blue Flame Stadium.

Do you hear the whippoorwill?
Last night I was outside in the front yard with the dog and looked up at the sky, which had cleared. It was dark except for starlight. The night sky was beautiful. I could see 
the big dipper. And then I heard the call of a whippoorwill coming from somewhere in the woods.
So I sat on the front porch and listened. From what I’ve read, it appears that the whippoorwill population is on the decline. I’m sorry to know that, and not just because of their beautiful call.
They’re interesting birds, as instead of rising at the crack of dawn to sing their special song, they call at night when they are active and feeding.
You can walk in the woods and almost step on a nesting whippoorwill, as they nest on
