City offers contracts to cover fire districts

PICKENS — For the time being, Pickens firefighters will continue to answer calls in rural fire districts.
“For no money, free of charge, we will continue to run all the calls for the month of January,” Pickens fire chief Chris Elrod said at Monday night’s city council meeting. “The next (contract) starts Feb. 2 to take that two-mile global around our department and respond to all the activities
First baby of 2015
Weighing an even 9 pounds, Abigail Swanger was born at 2:07 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 1, at Baptist Easley, earning her the distinction of being the first baby born in Pickens County this year. Abigail was welcomed by mom Kelly Swanger and two big sisters, ages 9 and 12.
Six Mile schedules community watch event
SIX MILE — Pickens County Sheriff’s Office and Town of Six Mile officials have scheduled a community watch meeting for 7 p.m. Monday at town hall.
The meeting, which is open to all residents of the Six Mile area, will feature tips and presentations from sheriff’s office officials, as well as handouts provided by law enforcement.

Locals plan MLK Day walk
PICKENS — Local residents will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with an annual walk along Main Street in Pickens and a ceremony on the steps of the Pickens County Courthouse.
Residents will gather at Pickens Presbyterian Church on the morning of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 19, and leave there on a walk to the courthouse at 8:45 a.m.
The celebration at the courthouse is set to begin at 10 a.m.
The guest speaker for the event will be the Rev. Otis Griffin of Easley Union Baptist Church.
Dr. C.L. Cruell will recite King’s famous “I Have A Dream” speech.
Delegation meeting set for Thursday
EASLEY — Members of the public will have a chance to make their voices heard when the Pickens County Legislative Delegation holds its annual meeting this week.
The delegation’s meeting is scheduled for Thursday at the Carr Center at West End Hall in Easley, located at 201 S. Fifth St.

Dacusville names 2014 citizen, business of the year

DACUSVILLE — The Dacusville Community Club celebrated the Christmas season and the approaching new year with an awards ceremony, music and tree lighting last month.
Tom Turner was recently named the 2014 Dacusville Citizen of the Year.
Awards were presented for 2014 Citizen of the Year, 2014 Business of the Year and Honorary Mayor for 2015.
Tom Turner of Dacusville was named Citizen of the Year. He served the Dacusville Fire Department as a volunteer fireman and was recently elected chairman of the board for the Dacusville Fire Department.
Turner often quietly goes behind the scenes to help friends and neighbors in need. He has opened his farm to the Dacusville Heritage Association for the highly successful Farm Days celebration, held each Labor Day in Dacusville, and serves as an active member of the Dacusville Community Club.

Pickens Co. Beekeepers Association plans class
PICKENS — If you have ever wondered about the workings of a colony of social insects, the Pickens County Beekeepers Association has just the class for you.
PCBA will be offering an introductory beekeeping class in January and February. The four Saturday sessions will cover all of the information needed for anyone to start keeping bees.
The classes will be held on Jan. 24 and 31 and Feb. 14 and 21.

Duke to test emergency sirens next week
Three-minute test scheduled
at approximately 11:50 a.m
UPSTATE — The public alert notification sirens around the Oconee Nuclear Station will be tested Wednesday, January 14, at approximately 11:50 a.m.
The 65 sirens within 10 miles of the Oconee Nuclear Station will be tested for three-minutes to make sure each siren works properly. This full-cycle siren test is performed once each quarter in cooperation with emergency officials in Oconee and Pickens counties, who are responsible for

EASLEY — Formerly Virginia’s at Baptist Easley Hospital has re-opened as Virginia’s Coffee and Gifts and will host an open house on Sunday, Jan. 11, from 2-4 pm.
The newly renovated and re-styled Virginia’s Coffee and Gifts offers Starbucks products, as well as flowers, candles, unique gifts, stuffed animals, cards and candy.
