A river runs through the yard

A river runs through it.

That’s a good description of my front yard., as I write this. Well, my backyard, too.

I was lucky, though, during last Thursday’s deluge. After seeing photos of what other residents in Pickens County and across the Upstate endured, I really should be thankful.

We live on relatively high ground, but we still get a pretty good gully-washing when these big rains come along.

It actually used to be a lot worse than this. It used to gush right straight at my front steps, even with a normal rainfall of half an inch or so, and it washed away all my grass.

That was after the city of Easley, in its somewhat less than

Courier Letters to the Editor 2-12-20

An alternate perspective

Dear Editor,

I read with much interest the letter from Olivia Fowler and was following her train of thought until she got to the part where she called President Trump a draft-dodger and then attacked Trump for his comments about McCain. My perspective on these two items are so much different than hers.

First, I don’t hold any ill feelings toward anyone who avoided going to Vietnam. This was a conflict and was never a declared war halfway around the globe in a country we knew nothing about, and most of us had no interest in their affairs. President Johnson (Democrat) turned “giving help to some insurgents” into a full-scale debacle that cost the lives of more than 50,000 brave Americans. This was the first war the USA ever lost! I have friends that are very proud of their service in Vietnam, and I am proud of them, but again, I hold no ill feelings toward others who could legally avoid going. Thank God President Nixon (Republican) ended our involvement.

Secondly, I will remember McCain as a very bitter, hateful senator who with his last words on

Princeton Review names Clemson among ‘Best Value Colleges,’ offering greatest ROI

CLEMSON — Clemson University has been recognized by The Princeton Review as being one of the nation’s best institutions to offer students the greatest return on educational investment. Out of 656 colleges and universities evaluated for this year’s “Best Value Colleges of 2020” list, only 200 received the designation.

Clemson was also recognized for its career services, ranking first out of 20. The Princeton Review considers more than 40 data points affecting return on investment (ROI) — including academic offerings, affordability and career preparation. Clemson’s top-level programs, faculty-to-student ratio, career services, internship opportunities and alumni network contributed to Clemson’s placement.

“Choosing a university can be a daunting task and Clemson students choose daily to invest in creating an atmosphere of success and engagement that produces such positive and notable outcomes,” said David Kuskowski, Clemson’s director of undergraduate admissions. “The

Use watermelon for these Valentine’s treats

Valentine’s Day naturally brings thoughts of hearts, flowers, sweetness and love. Because it also occurs during American Heart Month, it’s a perfect opportunity to start taking care of your own heart and the hearts of loved ones.

Part of the charm of the day’s celebrations is in giving family and friends flavorful foods to enjoy from chocolates and candies to other sugary treats. However, the festivities don’t have to be completely focused on unhealthy bites in order to make someone feel special.

This year, it can be easy to share in the fun of Valentine’s Day by serving those you love with sweet, seasonal treats. For example, these Frosted Watermelon Cutouts make for ideal snacks for children and adults alike whether it’s an after-school treat or a sweet dessert with just three ingredients, heart-shaped cookie cutters and minimal time spent in the kitchen.

If you’re really looking to impress that special someone, this Watermelon and Chocolate
