July 4 events planned this weekend

 

COUNTY — Pickens County is ready to celebrate the nation’s independence, with a number of events planned throughout the July 4 weekend.

Clemson

Although Clemson officials had planned to bring the annual celebration downtown after several years in Central, ClemsonFest will not be taking place this year, according to Greater Clemson Chamber of Commerce officials.

 

Easley

The city of Easley will host a two-day festival in Old Market Square.

Beginning at 4 p.m. this Saturday, July 3, the square’s amphitheater will host concerts from local bands including Carolina Highway, The Flashbacks, Mark Webb Jr. and Song Band Upstate.

On Sunday, July 4, Ansley Burns will perform at the amphitheater at 4 p.m., followed by Joe Lasher at 5:30 p.m. and Colt Ford at 8 p.m.

The amphitheater will also host multiple Ultimate Air Dog shows both days. See cityofeasley.com for the Ultimate Air Dog show schedule.

Fireworks will begin at 9:45 p.m. Sunday.

 

Liberty

Liberty will present its Love My Liberty July 4 celebration beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Liberty Recreation Stadium. The event will feature hot dogs, water, snow cones, kids’ games, music and fireworks.

 

Pickens

The city of Pickens will host a free concert and fireworks show Saturday, July 3, at the city’s amphitheater on West Main Street. Carolina Beggars will perform from 6-8:30 p.m. and the concert will be followed by the fireworks.

The Market at the Mill will hold its third annual charity bike run and bike show rain or shine from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, July 3.

The bike run entry fee is $20. Entries do not have to be bikes. Everyone is welcome.

Entry fee for the indoor bike show is $10 per bike. Bikes should be entered by 11 a.m., and trophies will be awarded at 5 p.m. Trophies will be given for first, second and third place and best in show.

Giveaways of $500 in cash and $250 in Market Bucks will be held at 4 p.m. Bike show entries will qualify for the cash drawing. All proceeds will go to assist a military veteran.

 

Six Mile

Six Mile will hold its Independence Day celebration from 6:30 p.m. until dark Friday, July 2, at Ponderosa Park. The celebration will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a bicycle parade. Children are encouraged to decorate their bikes and to wear American costumes. Prizes will be awarded for best decorated bike, best dressed biker and best overall.

Fireworks will begin after dark.

SDPC asks for public input on ESSER funds

COUNTY — The School District of Pickens County is seeking public input concerning grant funds that were received through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

The district has received grant funds administered through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund.

Through the grant process the district has been allocated $26,268,763 in ESSER III funds to address students’

• Farmers market plans event for kids

The Central Farmers Market wants to do something fun for children and families July 3.
The market will be on Bolick Field behind the caboose on Main Street in Central.
The market opens at 8 a.m. At 9 a.m., old-fashioned children’s games like sack races, three-legged races and carrying an egg on a spoon will start. Then at 10 a.m., American Legion Post 151 will lead children on their decorated bicycles in a parade around the field walking path.

• Freedom Ride set for this Saturday

The Market at the Mill will its second annual Freedom Ride on Saturday, July 3, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Proceeds will support an American military veteran.
The event includes a motorcycle run through the county and an indoor bike show featuring best-in-show and vintage awards at 5 p.m. There will be live music, food vendors, a $500 cash giveaway with door prizes and shopping with 150 arts/crafts vendors. Swap meet tables will be available for motorcycle-related items.

• Libraries offers reading program

This year’s summer reading theme at the Pickens County Library is “Tails and Tales.” The program began on June 7 and runs until July 31.
All Pickens County residents will receive a postcard in the mail.
The postcard will include a list of fun activities to complete and return to the library. To complete the program, participants can choose to read 10 books, complete 10 activities or a combination of both options to total 10. More postcards will be available at all library branches.

• Soapstone to hold next fish fry July 17

Soapstone Church invites everyone to a special fundraiser at the church, located at 296 Liberia Road in Pickens, on Saturday, July 17.
The event will feature fine cooking and will be held from noon-8 p.m.
Visitors will enjoy true Southern cooking, including a fish fry, barbecue and fried chicken with all the fixings right from Ms. Mable’s kitchen.

Officials to test sirens around nuclear station

SENECA — The 65 outdoor warning sirens around Oconee Nuclear Station will be tested for three minutes between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 14, as scheduled.

To ensure they are functioning properly, it may be necessary to test some sirens more than once.

Easley extends Doodle Trail golf cart program

EASLEY — Easley City Council approved a resolution recently extending a program that allows a limited number of golf carts on the Doodle Trail during certain days.

But council members agreed, following reports of participants being harassed on the trail, that more education is needed about the purpose of the program.
