Sorority gives to The Parenting Place

Rec center named for longtime director

PICKENS — After a year and a half of work, the Pickens Recreation Center opened on Sangamo Road in the spring of 2005.

The state-of-the-art 21,000-square-foot complex has since been home to many of the brightest young athletes of the city and now, 17 years later, it has been renamed the Cheri Terrapin Anthony Recreation Complex in honor of the city’s longtime recreation director.

Anthony, who began working at the Pickens Recreation Department in 1995 and became director in 1998, was honored Saturday at the recreation center

Pickens WWII vet receives French honor

PICKENS — Nearly 80 years after risking his life on French soil during World War II, a Pickens resident was presented last week with the highest decoration bestowed by France for his heroic efforts.

Raymond Dawkins, 96, was awarded the French Legion of Honor by Vincent Hommeril, Consul General of France for the Southeastern United States. Dawkins is now a Chevalier (knight) in the Legion of Honor.

Pickens Carolina One volleyball team wins bronze in Phoenix

PICKENS — The Pickens Carolina One 18 Elite volleyball team won bronze at the USA Volleyball Girls’ 18s Junior National Championships in Phoenix, Ariz.

Middle school draws criticism for plans for student meetings

PICKENS — A local middle school has drawn attention after a speaker was reportedly invited to come talk to minority students “about how to cope with being a student in a predominately white school.”

Libs of TikTok, a Twitter account with a following of nearly 1 million accounts, published a letter on Sunday night sent to certain parents from Pickens Middle School principal James King dated April 11 about what the profile described as “racially segregated lunch meetings.”
