Doodle Trail groundbreaking set
PICKENS — After years of planning and debate, Pickens and Easley will officially break ground on the Doodle Trail this week.
The groundbreaking ceremony, which is planned for noon Thursday and open to the public, will be held at the Pickens Rail Yard at 409 E. Cedar Rock St. in Pickens.
According to Pickens city administrator Bruce Evilsizor, the groundbreaking will kick off the construction phase of the multi-use recreational trail, which will stretch more than seven miles

Easley’s Simons resigns position

EASLEY — Easley city administrator Fox Simons has announced his resignation from the position.
Simons, who has worked for the city for the last eight years, will step down Feb. 13 to accept an assistant city administrator position in Myrtle Beach.
His first day at his new position is set for Feb. 16.

Police: Student assaulted EHS administrators, resource officer
EASLEY — Police arrested an Easley High School student on multiple charges last week after they allege he assaulted a resource officer and two other school employees following an investigation into stolen money.
According to Maj. Tim Tollison of the Easley Police Department, two administrators searched a 15-year-old student’s bookbag after an accusation of stolen money on Friday.

Hiott named chair of House ag committee

PICKENS — Rep. Davey Hiott, a Pickens native, has been named chairman of the Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environmental Affairs Committee of the South Carolina House of Representatives.
Hiott became interested in the position after the former chairman stepped down for a spot on the Ways and Means Committee.

Bowers pushes for career center funding

PICKENS — Pickens County School Board member Phillip Bowers unsuccessfully pushed for $41,000 in funding to be restored for the Career and Technology Center at the board’s meeting on Monday night.
Dr. Herbert Cooper said he would like to hear superintendent Danny Merck’s opinion on the matter.
Merck said the funding was needed, but there were other needs created by board budget cuts. It would be up to the board whether to restore funding now.

PICKENS — Lt. Marvin Nix, a 20-year veteran of the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, has been promoted to the rank of captain and has been assigned to serve as the division commander for the Judicial Services Division within the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office — a position recently vacated by the retirement of Keith Galloway.
Nix will oversee the division responsible for the operation of the detention facility, as well as the security for the Pickens County Courthouse.

Field honored for 50 years of service to DAR
UPSTATE — Dr. Nora Rooche Field was honored on Jan. 20 by the Wizard of Tamassee Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) at the Historic Ballenger House for her 50th year of membership in the DAR.

Field joined as junior member and she was a fourth-generation member of the Wizard of Tamassee Chapter. Her great-grandmother, Martha Bowen Nimmons, was a charter member of the chapter. Field is descended from several founding families of Pickens County, including Anderson, Anthony, Bowen, Cantrell, Easley, Field, Griffin and Nimmons.
Dr. Field’s daughters, Dr. Rooksie Noorai of Central and Miss Mari Noorai, are both fifth-generation members of the DAR and joined as junior members. Rooksie Noorai is also a member of the Wizard of Tamassee Chapter and State Vice Chair
Bull riding returns to Pickens Saturday
PICKENS — Championship Bull Riding will return to Pickens this Saturday at the indoor arena located at 422 Ann Street.
The event will be held at the location every Saturday beginning at 7 p.m. each week through April 4 and will feature junior, amateur and open bull riding. There will also be calf riding and mutton busting.
This will be the fifth year Championship Bull Riding has been held in Pickens.
Admission is $10 per person, with kids younger than 5 getting in free.
Those who would like to compete can get booked by visiting the indoor arena on Mondays from 7-9 p.m.
