CENTRAL — “Muchow-Mania” ran wild Friday night at Singleton Field, as Daniel senior kicker Nick Muchow sent a 36-yard field goal through the uprights in the game’s waning seconds to ice a huge 20-19 region victory over the Greenville Red Raiders on senior night.

The Daniel fans were more raucous than they have been all season as the Lions (5-4, 1-2 Region I-4A) posted their first region win of the year and moved one step closer to making the playoffs in their final home contest of the season.

EASLEY — With the Green Wave needing a win to stay in position to earn a playoff spot, the Easley offensive line did its part to pave a smooth road in that direction.

That road was enough footing for the Wave to amass 336 yards rushing on the way to a 38-14 victory over the previously third-place Woodmont Wildcats (3-7, 1-3 Region I-5A). Woodmont falls to fourth place behind Westside, Hanna and Easley for the time being, with the Wildcats’ season now complete. Easley has one game remaining, a region matchup on the road at J.L. Mann this Friday. A win would wrap up third place for the Green Wave, while a loss would create a three-way tie for the final two playoff spots.

LIBERTY — The Liberty Red Devils returned home following a three-week road trip and doubled up the Ninety Six Wildcats with a 28-14 homecoming win last Friday.

The Red Devils turned the ball over four times in the game and the Wildcats capitalized on two of the fumbles to score twice to make the game close. The Red Devil defense provided a stellar effort in limiting the Wildcats to just 128 total offensive yards in the game to help secure the win and even the Red Devils’ Region II-2A mark at 1-1 on the season with one remaining home game this Friday night against Southside Christian.

In fall, my fancy turns to bulbs

The tulip bulbs arrived this week, and once again I have high hopes for the spring. Maybe this year will be the year the vermin don’t eat the bulbs before there’s even a chance of seeing the blooms.

On the theory that they can only get to them if they’re planted in the ground, the plan is to protect them from the onslaught by planting them in big sturdy containers.
