Opposition to the project has gained major momentum over the past week, with residents and environmental groups crying out on social media and at meetings about the development’s impact on the surrounding area.

SUNSET — Pickens County Sheriff’s Office deputies found a body believed to be a 28-year-old man reported missing two weeks ago just before noon last Wednesday.

Chief Deputy Creed Hashe said the body was found in an extremely remote wooded area about half a mile from the home of Gabriel Bradley Hein’s parents on Little Eastatoee Road in the Sunset community, where Hein was last seen May 31.

Hashe said Hein was last seen walking away from the home that evening and was exhibiting signs and symptoms characteristic of paranoia and making strange statements that “people were out to get him.”

The body found Wednesday is believed to be Hein’s based on several pieces of evidence Hashe said were found at the scene. A handgun was also recovered near the body, and a preliminary investigation indicated the man

SIX MILE — Logan Dale Evans’ mother says her son was a protector.

In fact, his last act helped prevent more people from being killed in the very flood that took his life.

During their June meeting, Pickens County Council members passed a resolution memorializing the crossing of Silver Creek Road over Camp Creek as “Logan’s Crossing.”

Logan’s mother, Melanie Ball, spoke during the meeting.

On Aug. 6, 2013, the creek that crosses Silver Creek Road and lines her family’s property flooded for the first time in 70 years, Ball said.

“The random event that none of us would have expected or ever been prepared for took the life of my 23-year-old son, Logan Dale Evans,” Ball said.

The creek rose in 10 feet in a matter of minutes, sweeping Logan away to his death, Ball said.

Logan was a gentle giant, his mother
