2 arrested on drug charges

EASLEY — Two people face multiple charges after police said a traffic stop at the Applebee’s in Easley last month turned up heroin, crack cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana.
The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office Community Action Team conducted the stop on April 24, according to a news release issued Monday.

Infant sleep program aims to help parents, babies

COUNTY — The Pickens County Coroner’s Office has launched a new program designed to keep infants safe while they’re sleeping.
The Infant Safe Sleep program kicked off a couple of weeks ago, according to chief deputy coroner Andrew Wilson.
The program is designed to educate parents on the safest ways for their infants to sleep and gives them some equipment to help them do so.

County council retains special library millage

PICKENS — After considerable resident input and internal debate, Pickens County Council voted last week to amend a change in the proposed budget and leave the county library system on its own special millage.
The motion, which passed 4-2, was presented by Councilwoman Claiborne Linvill, who represents the Clemson area, in response to county administrator Ken Roper’s decision to redirect dedicated library millage totaling more than $3
million in the general fund.
“I think Mr. Roper felt he needed to do that, but this would represent a change in how libraries have been funded for 27 years, and millage has been put there in such a way so that the growth rate we’ve been discussing this entire meeting is matched to the funding of the libraries,” said Linvill, who represents the Clemson-area District 1.

Officials focused on development rules

COUNTY — A moratorium on large-scale developments in Pickens County is aimed at giving county council time to strengthen standards governing such developments and growth in general, according to county administrator Ken Roper.

Part of US 178 closed for work
PICKENS — About 15 miles of U.S. Highway 178 north of Pickens has been closed this week.
The S.C. Department of Transportation has closed the stretch on Highway 178, also known as Moorefield Memorial Highway, to replace a damaged culvert pipe beneath the road, the agency said in a release Thursday. No estimated reopening date was provided, though the work was expected to last about a week.
A detour was posted advising drivers to take E. Preston McDaniel Road or S.C. Highway 11.

EASLEY — The Willows of Easley recently received the U.S. News & World Report Best Independent Living and Best Assisted Living awards.

EASLEY — Easley American Legion Post 52 baseball tryouts will be held May 16 at Alice Field in Easley.
Pitchers and catchers are to report at 5:15 p.m., and all other positions will begin at 6 p.m.

Daniel tennis drops state title match
FLORENCE — The Daniel High School boys’ tennis team came up short of winning its first state championship since 1981 over the weekend, as it fell to Camden by a score of 5-1 on Saturday in the Class 3A state championship match in Florence.
The Lions (14-1), who have won the Class 3A Upper State title each of the last two years, got their lone win Saturday in doubles action from the duo of Nolan Garrett and Aiden Rollins, who won their match by scores of 6-3 and 6-2.
