Edwards receives SWU scholarship

CENTRAL — Carson Edwards signed a letter of intent to attend Southern Wesleyan University on a music ensemble scholarship.

Edwards is a 2017 graduate of Powdersville High School. Graduating with honors, he received the Patriot Scholar Award and was a member of the National Honor Society. Edwards also graduated with Honors from the Computer Services Program at the Anderson District Career and Technology Center. While at Powdersville, he participated in the Powdersville State Champion Marching Band as well as the Powdersville Show Chorus. His personal interests include serving in the Rock Springs Baptist Church Orchestra and singing in the Youth Choir. He is most passionate about his leadership role in the Young Men’s Quartet. Known as the Bow Tie Quartet, they travel to churches and venues where they sing four-part harmony quartet songs.

Education Foundation grants first round of donations to schools

COUNTY — The Education Foundation of Pickens County has announced its first round of donations ever for Pickens County schools, funding grants to impact     hundreds of students.

Totaling $4,500, the donations will fund grant requests submitted by teachers, and they will benefit students at elementary, middle, and high school levels across the district’s four main attendance areas.

Student Art Exhibit Kicks Off with June 29 Reception

PICKENS — Student artists who have taken classes with Renee Gillespie at the Pickens County Museum of Art and History will be exhibiting their worksat the museum in a show that begins June 29.

The public is invited to a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on June 29 at the museum, 307 Johnson Street, Pickens.

Former POW recounts Korean War nightmare

It was Nov. 4, 1950. When Funchess radioed the brass back at headquarters to tell them what he had seen, they told him he was mistaken. There were no Chinese soldiers in North Korea.

“The final instructions from battalion headquarters was — if Chinese soldiers are in Korea, they’re protecting hydroelectric plants. Under no conditions will you fire on a Chinese national,” Funchess said. “Before the day ended, I had been struck by machine gun fire, and I was a POW of the Chinese army.”

He remained a prisoner for nearly three years — 34 months to be exact — enduring
