Soapstone hosting final fish fry meals

To my dearest and loving community,

For 22 years, Soapstone Baptist Church has held a monthly fish fry for the community and folks who journeyed from far and wide.

Sept. 18 and Oct. 16 will be the final two fish fry meals served by the church.

It’s time to retire the fish fryer.

PS&L’s Lauren Murphy announces retirement

PICKENS — Pickens Savings and Loan Association executive vice president Lauren Murphy recently announced that she is retiring.

Murphy began her banking career in her hometown of Spartanburg. During her 40-plus years in banking, Murphy has held roles in several areas, including marketing, lending and branch management. Since 2007, Murphy has overseen the loan department at Pickens Savings and Loan.

Kerr presented with Silver Beaver award

EASLEY — At the Boy Scouts of America Blue Ridge Council annual banquet Aug. 10, Scott Kerr was presented the Silver Beaver award. This is the highest award presented to a volunteer adult by a BSA council.

Each month, Boxwood Manor, located in Pendleton, and Collins Ole Towne, located in Central, are sites for Story Time Plus programs and Homeschool Days. Story Time Plus runs 10-11:30 a.m. and is designed for ages 8 and under. Admission is $3 for each child age 5 or older, with a $10 household maximum. Homeschool Day runs from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and is designed for ages 6 through 14. Admission is $5 for ages 6 and over, with a $15 household maximum.

MARGARET ANN MCCALL

PICKENS — Margaret Ann McCall Coffman of Pickens transcended this life on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2021, peacefully in her sleep.

The wife of Ralph Lee Coffman, Margaret was born Jan. 7, 1940, in Cashiers, N.C., to Shearron “Fess” McCall and his wife, Monica (Rochester). The youngest of 11, she was orphaned at the tender age of two and adopted by her sister, Winnie Lee Nix, and husband, Grover Nix, living in Pickens.

After graduating Pickens High School at the top of her class, Margaret married the late F. Don Durham and raised four children in Germany, Pickens and Melbourne, Fla. Daniel takes down Duluth for first out-of-state win since 1995

CENTRAL — The last time the Daniel High School football team played an out-of-state opponent, head coach Jeff Fruster was still playing for the Lions.

Red Devils forced to cancel game against Landrum due to COVID

LIBERTY —  After being forced to miss two of their first three games of the season due to COVID-19, the Liberty Red Devils will continue to wait once again this week following the cancellation of their matchup with Landrum.

The Red Devils announced the cancellation of this Friday’s game with the Cardinals in an update released last Friday.

“Our JV and varsity football games scheduled for next week against Landrum have been canceled,”
