Coroner: Two dead in murder-suicide

EASLEY — Police are still investigating the deaths of two people in Easley on Monday in what coroner Kandy Kelley called a murder-suicide.
The Pickens County Sheriff’s Department was called to a home on Red Oak Court on Monday in reference to a shooting. When deputies arrived they found the bodies of Jeffrey Scott Carroll, 49, and Kelly Denise Metcalf, 42, lying in a bed at the home the couple shared.
Kelley said both died from a single gunshot wound to the head.
According to official PCSO reports, when deputies arrived they were met by the daughter of Metcalf, who deputies say was at the scene with her husband and her brother.

Liberty couple charged with child neglect

LIBERTY — A Liberty couple faces four charges each of unlawful conduct toward a child after they were found living with their four children in an unclean home with no running water.
On Monday, deputies arrested Alishia Nichol Edwards, 29, and Barry Dean Edwards, II, 29, of 1674 Greenville Highway in Liberty.
The two are accused of placing their four children, ages 1, 3, 5 and 6, at unreasonable risk of harm by allowing them to live in an unsafe, unhealthy and unsanitary environment.

3rd annual Wings and Wheels for Meals set for this Saturday

LIBERTY — The third annual Wings and Wheels event to benefit Pickens County Meals on Wheels is scheduled for this Saturday, April 14, at the Pickens County Airport.
The event, which will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., will feature a classic car show, airplane rides, food and fun for the entire family. Admission is free.

Easley honors officers

EASLEY — Easley’s city council meeting Monday night opened with a tribute to the three city police officers and one Pickens County Sheriff’s deputy who put their lives in danger to rescue a S.C. Highway Patrol officer after a crash in the line of duty last month.

Man arrested after camera found on Central mill urinal

CENTRAL — A Seneca man was arrested last week after workers found a camera attached to a urinal at the Central Textile Mill.
According to an incident report from the Central Police Department, a maintenance worker at the mill discovered a camera attached to a velcro strip on the bottom of a urinal in a men’s restroom on March 30
Officers arrested Douglas Eugene Robinson, 44, of Seneca, on April 4, charging him with voyeurism;/violating a place of privacy.
Robinson was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.

Three killed on county roads in deadly week

COUNTY — Three people were killed in separate motor vehicle accidents around the county within the last week.
According to Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley, on April 4 at 2:45 a.m., Randy Lee Gibbs, Jr., 19, of West B Avenue in Central, was involved in a single-car accident on Furman Smith Highway in Central.
Kelley said that Gibbs lost control of his vehicle and died from blunt force trauma to the head. Gibbs was pronounced dead at the scene. Kelley said he was not wearing a seat belt.

County students dominate SC SkillsUSA competition

GREENVILLE — On the last two days of last month, more than 500 of the best career and technology students in the state of South Carolina came together at the TD Center in Greenville to compete in the SC SkillsUSA championships.
Students competed in everything from construction science to engineering to cosmetology.

Wilson charged with mail fraud

EASLEY — The Easley businessman at the center of an alleged Ponzi scheme involving his company, Atlantic Bullion & Coin, Inc., was charged last week with mail fraud.
Ron Wilson, a former Anderson County councilman and owner of AB&C, turned himself in to U.S. Marshals at the federal courthouse in Greenville last Wednesday, but posted a secured $1 million bond later that afternoon.

UCM fights hunger

COUNTY — With a hit movie and book trilogy, The Hunger Games has taken pop culture by storm in recent months, but the title has taken on a new meaning in Pickens County this April.
Suzanne Burns, who is currently serving her second year on the United Christian Ministries Board, is working diligently to combat hunger throughout the Pickens community.

Porter wins main event at GPS

EASLEY — Toby Porter had to battle Marty Ward the first few laps of Saturday night’s Late-Model Stock main event at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, but once he cleared Ward for the uncontested lead, he stepped on ahead to win his third race of the season.
Porter, who was hounded with handling problems last season which kept him out of victory lane, remains undefeated this year after extensive rebuilding during the winter.
